America News: The US Senate has confirmed the appointment of Indian-American lawyer Rupali H Desai to the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. With this, she has become the first judge of South Asian origin to be appointed as a judge in this powerful court.
67 lawmakers from both the US parties – Democratic Party and Republican Party – voted in support of Desai on Thursday, 4 August, while 29 members voted against him. Ninth Circuit is headquartered in San Francisco, California. It is the largest of the 13 appellate courts in the country.
“It is no surprise that Desai’s nomination was widely appreciated in the political and ideological circles,” said Senate Justice Committee on Justice and Majority Whip Dick Durbin. Apart from this, his nomination has been supported by state judges, law enforcement officials and three organizations associated with the fire service. With 16 years of experience as a lawyer, Desai will make an extraordinary contribution to the Ninth Circuit.
