Russia Ukraine US Kyiv US Embassy Russia Ukraine Tensions

Washington: The US is preparing to evacuate its embassy in Ukraine amid Western intelligence officials fearing a Russian attack on Ukraine. US officials said the State Department would soon announce that all American staff at the Kiev embassy would be required to leave the country in advance due to fears of Russian aggression. The Ministry of External Affairs did not comment on this.

The ministry had earlier ordered the families of US embassy employees in Ukraine to leave the country. Apart from this, non-essential personnel were told whether they want to depart from there or not, it is at their discretion. The new move comes at a time when the US heightened its warnings about a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Officials said on condition of anonymity that a limited number of US diplomats could be moved to Ukraine’s far west near the border with NATO ally Poland, to maintain a US diplomatic presence in the country.

Earlier, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Friday that Russia is still gathering more troops on the Ukrainian border. He warned that the attack could happen “at any time”, even during the Winter Olympics which ends on 20 February. “Simply put, we are seeing very disturbing signs of a Russian advance,” Blinken said after a meeting of foreign ministers of the Quad countries – Australia, India, Japan and the United States – in Melbourne.
